The colors only started showing up after he claimed he was gay. Coincidence?

All of the prologue is the main character remembering things. The color signifies that this was a significant thing that left a mark in the memory.
Or you are trying to cover up that he overdid it with his gay acting, and now everything is flaming…

In the last panel, the back of her head with her hair tied up reminds me of Riza Hawkeye from FMA.
